BAE Systems unveiled the enhanced tank, called the Black Night, in the hopes the Ministry of Defence will purchase the upgrades to ensure the army has the best equipment available.

It is an upgrade of the Challenger 2 tank which was built by the company in the 1990s and was used in Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.

Black Night is the result of the Challenger 2 Life Extension Project, an MoD contract worth more than £7million to create state-of-art tanks until at least 2035.

Campaign leader for Team Challenger 2 at BAE Systems, Simon Jackson, said: "The UK is home to some of the world's finest engineering companies, who have pushed the boundaries of combat vehicle design with Black Night.

"We are providing the bulk of this upgrade from home soil, however, we have chosen the best defence companies from around the world to collaborate with also, including names from Canada, France and Germany who bring unique skills and proven technology.

"The British army has our commitment that we will deliver the most capable upgrade possible, and the best value for money."

The Black Night would work alongside current tanks and includes a front and rear infrared camera on each tank to allow the gunner to focus on one target while the commander identifies other targets.

The upgraded tank can detect incoming anti-tank missiles of armour penetrating rounds.It also automatically launches a counter-explosive to neutralise the threat.

It can identify the source of an enemy weapon systems then automatically point the gun at the source.

Black Night will help save money compared to the current model as it used a “less energy-hungry kit”.

It includes a regenerative braking in the vehicles turret which creates power when the gun slows down its position.

It comes as growing fears of a confrontation between NATO and Russia seem more and more likely.

In June this year, a General Mark Carleton-Smith, Russia still poses a great threat to the UK.

Russia revealed in March this year a terrifying unmanned robot tank capable of attacking buildings on its own as the prospect of war between Vladimir Putin’s regime and the West looks increasingly likely.

Tensions are on a knife-edge between the UK and Russia following an attack using a nerve agent on ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

A video by manufacturer Kalashnikov showed the unmanned tank attacking a building on its own, and also being used to provide cover for foot soldiers.

Kalashnikov's Soratnik - or Companion - tank is capable of scouting, dealing with mine and patrolling as well as guarding duties, according to its makers.
